Do you ever feel like you’re constantly juggling between different roles without a clear transition? As a stylist, the lines between time at home and time serving clients behind the chair can become blurred, making it challenging to find balance.
In my journey, I’ve struggled with seamlessly transitioning from the chaos of morning routines and salon responsibilities to the equally demanding tasks of managing a household and family. Sound familiar? Being a hairstylist in the salon service industry, you likely wear multiple hats throughout the day.
In today’s blog post, I want to share a few practical tips to help you separate your roles, reclaim personal power, and be present in your day within The Self-Care Behind The Chair Method.
Our Self-Care Behind The Chair method consists of four pillars – Communication Skills, Boundaries, Mindset Shifts, and Self-Care Strategies that act as a toolkit to combat the feeling of overwhelm, burnout, and compassion fatigue. Today, we’ll focus on Self-Care Strategies as a key practice to prevent burnout and create a healthier balance.
During a conversation with a friend in the therapy field, we discussed the challenges of navigating roles. She introduced a valuable transition technique: a breathing exercise (4/7/8 breath work) to relax the body, clear the mind, and transition smoothly between roles. This technique can be practiced in as little as 30 seconds, providing a moment of reprieve and mental reset.
My friend also shared additional ideas, such as
1.) Reciting a Mantra
2.) Place empowering notes in visible areas (her suggestion was on the dash of your car or an area you often see; I have one on my bathroom mirror)
3.) Listening to your favorite music
4.) Reciting poems
5.) Say a prayer if you are a person of religious faith
6.) Taking quiet moments to yourself
7. ) Practicing a breathing technique
8.) Blasting your favorite music that speaks to your soul
or whatever feels aligned for you to reconnect to your inner self.
I’ve incorporated these practices into my routine, and the impact has been transformative. The magic lies in these intentional moments of transition.
